7 Ways to Optimize Your Workspace for Better Health and Productivity

7 Ways to Optimize Your Workspace for Better Health and Productivity7 Ways to Optimize Your Workspace for Better Health and ProductivityA quality workspace design leads to a healthier, less stressful, and more productive atmosphere- when you prioritize calmness and comfort in your work setting, youll be able to produce your best work. So its essential that you take your physical work environment into consideration. With that in mind, here are seventips for optimizing your arbeitszimmer space to improve your health and productivity.1. Be mindful of airflow and temperatureMake sure your office space has the right combination of airflow, temperature, and humidity. The air quality within an office can have an impact on your health, so consider investing in plants and opening windows to maintain a healthy level of humidity. Fresh air is a great contributor to help you better focus, so it could be key to meeting your deadlines.2. Increase the natural lightIf you regularly experience eyestr ain, headaches, and blurred vision symptoms, consider letting more light into your office to maximize natural lighting. Natural light will help your productivity, and increase your health and state of mind.3. Keep water on your deskAnother helpful tip is to increase your water consumption, which will help to improve your sleep quality and energy levels, as well as your clarity of mind, awareness, and alertness. So, ensuring the bottle on your desk is always full of water could prove very beneficial for your work. 4. Descrease distractionsThe fewer distractions disturbing your work, the better quality your work will be. So turn off your phone, email notifications, and anything else that can take you away from your work and take away from your focus.5. Keep junk food away from your deskWhat you eat fuels and powers your days in the office. So if you want to feel energized, focused, and positive, you need to maintain a nutritious, balanced diet. Moderation is key when it comes to eatin g sensibly, and you can do this by paying attention to what you eat for your main meals, and avoiding eating junk food at your office desk. Snacking on healthy foods such as fruit, nuts, or granola bars will keep you feeling fuller for longer and will help you avoid the sluggish feeling experienced after junk food consumption. 6. Invest in a better storage systemIf you enjoy working remotely, consider investing in some stylish wall shelving, so that you can optimize your floor space with all of the essentials that your office needs, without compromising your space or office design. Having an effective storage system will make it easier to find exactly what you need and when you need it, which could work wonders for the efficiency of your work. And if you dont work remotely, consider asking your employee to invest in better storage systems, which will increase productivity and thus the bottom line.7. Clean your workspace at the end of every dayIn the name of optimization, its crucial that you keep your workstation clean and orderly so youre ready to go as soon as you log onto your computer in the morning. With this in mind, ensure that you tidy your desk five minutes before you leave for the day. Keep sanitizing wipes handy, and use them to regularly wipe the surface of your desk- this tip is especially important if youre partial to eating at your desk every now and then. Important Multitasking Skills Employers Value

Important Multitasking Skills Employers ValueImportant Multitasking Skills Employers ValueThere are very few jobs that dont require multitasking skills of some sort or another. Employees rarely have the luxury of focusing on one task at a time in todays work world. Most jobs require employees to balance competing demands for their time and energy, and employers expect you to be able to handle multiple priorities. Even if you dont think you do much of it, you are most likely multitasking much of the time. When youre job searching, employers will want to know that you have the ability to multitask successfully. So, its importantto be ready to share examples, during your job interviews, of how you have handledmultiple tasks or projects in the past. What Is Multitasking? Multitasking entails juggling different work activities and shifting attention from one task to another. Ideally, an employee will be able to meet the demands of several different stakeholders without dropping the ba ll. The danger in multitasking is that effectiveness can be compromised if the worker tries to carry out too many tasks at the saatkorn time. Modern technology complicates the situation for many workers since they are expected to handle simultaneous demands through email, text messages, phone calls, and in-person contact with constituents. Its become the norm to check your phone and your email while working on other tasks. Jobs that require intense concentration on complex tasks and also entail frequent interaction with others can be particularly challenging. It can be hard to focus when youre trying to do too many things at once, and its important to be able to manage your workload. How (and How Not) to Successfully Multitask Employees who multitask effectively must be able to rotate their concentration smoothly and entirely from one activity to another. In order to multitask successfully, workers must be able to prioritize tasks and address the most critical and pressing deman ds first. Its also important to know when multitasking is a bad idea. There are certain jobs and tasks where you need to work on one thing at a time. Be cognizant of that when youre interviewing and be sure to tailor your response to questions to the job youre being considered for. Examples of Multitasking in Various Professions The following list features examples and situations in which one would be expected to multitask based on their career path. Industries in this list range from hospitality to medicine, and entwurf to finance. See if you can recognize any familiar situations that apply to you. If you can, remember to bring up any applicable experience when explaining your multitasking capabilities to a future employer. Answering the phone while greeting visitors in a busy reception areaCarrying out work on three different graphic design projects at varying stages of completionCompleting five different meal orders at the same timeDesigning a new website while updating other sitesDisciplining a student who is acting out while teaching a lessonDriving a bus while quieting a verbally abusive passengerFielding calls from distressed investors while managing portfolios during a downturn in the marketManaging several social media accounts while working on email marketing tasks Monitoring air traffic patterns and directing aircraftPolishing a press release while finalizing the details for a promotional eventPreparing a lecture, generating a grant proposal, interacting with advisees who drop in, and providing input to a committee chairPreparing a sales presentation while fielding a complaint from another customerPrioritizing complaints in a customer service officeProcessing closing documents for a variety of real estate dealsProcessing insurance paperwork, scheduling appointments, greeting patients, and answering the phone in a dental office Refining computer programs while responding to the needs of in-house usersResponding to the call button from patients wh ile recording case notesRevising the wertzuwachs review process while answering employee questions about benefitsScheduling workers while managing their job responsibilitiesServing drinks, finalizing checks, taking orders, and delivering food while it is still hot to restaurant patronsTriaging patients in the emergency roomWriting a performance appraisal while fielding a call from the boss and finding a replacement for an absent worker Writing a proposal for a remodeling job while scheduling subcontractors More Skills You Need to Get Hired Multitasking is just one of the skills employers seek in candidates they hire. Organizational skills are a high priority. Review this list of the top skills employers look for, along with the job-specific skills required for a variety of occupations. How to Demonstrate Your Skills If a job announcement you are interested in specifically says that the ideal candidate for the position must have strong multitasking skills, then its a good idea to sit down before your interview and list instances where you have had to multitask either in your previous jobs or, if you are a recent college graduate, as part of your coursework.Once you have two or three examples you know that you can elaborate upon, youll be more than prepared to show (as opposed to simply telling) your interviewers that youre the multitasking rock star theyre seeking.

Making a big decision Dont forget to ask this question

Making a big decision Dont forget to ask this questionMaking a big decision Dont forget to ask this questionFor several years, Ive asked myself the same question before making an important decisionWhats the worst that can happen? (And no, this isnt the question I mentioned in the title of this post. Well get to that in a minute). The worst that can happen question is an important one. When Im about to make a big decision, I tend to dream up nightmarish scenarios. I know Im not alone here When we face the prospect of uncertainty- whether its buying a new house or quitting yur corporate job to become an entrepreneur- we tell ourselves that life as we know it will be over if things dont work out as planned. We assume well go broke, become a laughing stock, and lose all of our friends.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWriting down these worst-case scenarios has the strange effect of ta king their power away. Named must your fear be, as Yoda said, before banish it you can. When I do this exercise, I realize the sky isnt going to fall. The things that matter the fruchtwein to me will still be there regardless of what happens. But heres where I run into trouble My imagination can bereallypowerful when it comes to spinning negative tales about the future. My negative mind, as Elizabeth Gilbertwrites, is like a mall cop who thinks hes a Navy SEAL He hasnt slept in days, hes all hopped up on Red Bull, and hes liable to shoot at his own shadow in an absurd effort to keep everyone safe. Our negative thoughts resonate far more strongly than positive ones. The brain, to paraphrase Rick Hanson, is like Velcro for the negative but Teflon for the positive. Were wired to notice and exaggerate negative inputs The rattling in the dark, the smell of gas, the sight of smoke, the screeching of tires. Our pupils dilate, our heart starts pumping faster, and adrenaline is released. This n egativity bias makes evolutionary sense. If our ancestors ignored a potential positive outcome, they might have missed out on the spoils of a hunt, but at least they could survive to pass their genes onto their offspring. But if they ignored a potential negative- if they assumed that rustling in the bushes was a prey instead of a predator- they may have ended up as lunch.Because were wired to hone in on the potential downsides when making a decision, the playing field is rigged toward inaction. We stay the course, we play it safe, and we remain in our current state, however inferior it may be to other possibilities. The fear of missing out is nothing compared to the fear of a decision gone wrong. As a result, its not enough to ask,Whats the worst that can happen? To balance the scales, we also have to ask,Whats the best that can happen?Heres the thing Our decisions rarely produce a mushroom cloud. Taking a leap of faith can lead to joy, discovery, and the fulfillment of your full pote ntial. It can mean getting elected mayor, finding your life partner, or starting the next Netflix. This isnt blind optimism or a naive belief in the power of starry-eyed dreams. Unless you consider the best-case scenario along with the worst, your neolithic brain will steer you toward the seemingly safest path- inaction.Asking the best that can happen question has another upside It can push you to expand your boundaries. You might go for a PhD instead of a Masters. You might decide to launch your own business instead of answering to somebody else. You might decide tobuild your own rockets, instead of buying them from Russia. The next time youre about to make a decision, dont forget to ponder the best-case scenario.
